July 16th, 2009 - RISING SON: THE LEGEND OF SKATEBOARDER CHRISTIAN HOSOI
I have been busy trying to relive my youth, getting back on my skateboard after 12+ years since I last skated. I watched the Lords of Dogtown documentary about the early days of SoCal skateboarding, with my neighbor, and was suddenly inspired to get back on the board. First two weeks didn't go so hot seeing as I fractured my wrist and elbow skating the bowl, but I got back up and am still shredding. I recently saw the documentary "Rising Son: The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi" thanks to netflix's free streaming, I would recommend watching it if you are looking for a good documentary. For some of you that weren't around for skateboarding in the 80's, Christian Hosoi is one of the best skaters out there. I would guess everyone knows the name of Tony Hawk, well Christian Hosoi was the pre-cursor to Tony Hawk. The documentary shows the rise of Hosoi to the top of Skateboarding, and his downfall to drugs, and getting arrested for smuggling drugs. Shortly after being sentenced Christian gave his life over to Christ. It is a great testimony, and very inspiring. In digging around I found another documentary called "D.O.P.E." Which features some other amazing early skaters who came to Christ, Christian Hosoi, Bruec Logan, Jay Adams, and Dennis Martinez. I have not seen the documentary yet, but you can check out the trailer here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ4CtbpUT7Q&feature=player_embedded Very inspiring to see these legends and hear their testimonies. Hopefully this can inspire some of you as well to use your skills, talents, trials and victories for Christ. And yes, I just went and ordered a Christian Hosoi "2009 Hammerhead" board, all your old schoolers know what I am talking about. -Jonathan Dunn Bass Player for Demon Hunter
